Billy Schenk is: Known as “The Grandaddy” of Pop Western Art, Billy Schenck is a painter. It wasn’t until he discovered the films of Sergio Leone, that he was able to embrace his own western roots to find meaning in western mythology. Schenck’s work embraces a narrative theme and a cinematic aesthetic with silhouetted images combined with poignant text captions. An avid student, authenticator, and collector of western art, Billy is also a rodeo champion - a title that he derives as much pleasure from as his artistic accolades. He lives at his “Double Standard Ranch” in Santa Fe.
KPBS has this program, We The Artists, and it features a variety of fine artist in various fields. What a visual treat. Two I previewed today were Michele Oka Doner and Billy Schenck. I first saw Doner as a judge on The Next Great Artist. Her works really resonate with me, as well as her fabulous sense of style. According to KPBS, Michele Oka Doner is an internationally acclaimed artist whose career spans four decades. Her work is fueled by a lifelong study and appreciation for the natural world, from which she derives her formal vocabulary. Oka Doner’s artwork has been acquired by major museums and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée dés Arts Décoratifs at the Lourve among many others.
