This quilt highlights the plight of baby sea turtles... only one in a thousand makes it to adulthood. Here I show threats from large birds, fish, fishing nets and sea trash and as two baby turtles make their way.

I loved seeing the purple gallinule! and of course the alligators. Here is a great rest stop along the trail too.
SAQA is having another Benefit Auction this spring at the Spring Conference and all the pieces must be 6 x 8 inches! But worse than that, they will be matted down to 4.5 x 6.5!!!!!!!!! That is so tiny! It was a real challenge to come up with a design that would still read in this tiny format. Quicky cut paper mat for checking dimensions.
This is the most beautiful plant, and it is so accommodating. All you need do to start a new plant is stick a piece in the ground. It makes a shrub or small tree and has lush, dark leaves. The Latin name is Clerodendrum quadrilocolare and most people don't seem to know a common name for it but I found it listed on the web as Starburst Flower, bronze-leaved Clerodendrum, or Shooting Star. It is native to New Guinea and the Philippines.
Aquarium Art Walk is a collection of original art designed to raise awareness and funding to build a world class aquarium. This opportunity will provide Brevard county with a beautiful place to learn about conservation, observe sea life and learn about the ecology of the region. I have two pieces in the show, Tidepools and Sandpipers.
So hard being a baby sea turtle! Can you imagine, only 1 in a 1,000 make it to adulthood to reproduce their species! I am working on a quilt to represent this and some of the challenges they face. I keep getting new inspirations on it, it is a fun and progressing work! Lots of fish are happy to eat baby sea turtles, sharks being just one of the species!
I decided to add one more entry into Haven! made it by the deadline last night. This is really the companion piece to Roses, as it refers to the black Hollyhocks in my garden. They are so beautiful and black and silky dark purple!
The current SAQA call for quilts is called "Haven." It is described as, "All living creatures need a safe place to heal, regroup, rest, or retreat. Do you nurture your loved ones in a special place? Do you create a haven for others in need? What is your haven? Render the essential quality of a haven in visual form." I am entering two quilts, one represents the haven of my garden and the other the haven of my home in the mountains.
The number of bugs in our world is difficult to imagine. They survive on every continent --yes, even Antarctica! Worldwide environments rely on the contributions of these diminutive creatures, which range from insects to spiders, butterflies to beetles. They are a primary food source for many species and create the silk thread that humans weave into sumptuous cloth. They exhibit elaborate patterning and support ecological processes. They are so ubiquitous that the word “bug” translates globally, evoking both pleasure and pain.
This exhibition celebrates all manner of bugs and what they do, whether they creep, fly or invade computers; maybe there's even room for a Love Bug or two. This is a virtual exhibit and I am entering Three Beetles. Love these embroidery examples I have collected. There was no artist attribution, but whoever she was, she is a super fine artist! I love the dimension this gives to the textile work.
